No tsunami generated from New Guinea earthquake

A moderate size earthquake rattle the New Bittain area of New Guinea at about 7:39 a.m. Hawai'i time today.

The quake was assigned a magnitude of 6.6 but there appeared to be no threat a tsunami for Hawai'i, said Gerard Fryer, a geophysicist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in 'Ewa Beach.

Fryer said the quake was centered about 25 miles beneath the earth's surface.

There were no reports initially of damage or injury in New Guinea, Fryer said.
