Big Island site temporarily loses its only machine

Advertiser Staff

Big Island election officials were rushing a new electronic voting machine to the polling place at E.B DeSilva School in Hilo today, after the lone machine at the polling place malfunctioned.

"We've had some machine problems. That one polling place had a hard time getting its voting machine to work, and we're trying to get another one to them," said Big Island County Clerk Connie Kiriu.

She said polling otherwise appeared to be progressing smoothly, including at three locations where last month's earthquake required last-minute polling place changes.

In North Kohala, voters were redirected from damaged Hisaoka Gym to the Kohala High and Elementary School cafeteria, at Laupahoehoe School, voting was moved from the damaged library to the administration lobby, and at Honaunau Elementary School from the cafeteria to a classroom on campus.

County Clerk Peter Nakamura on Kaua'i said no particular problems arose. Voting was heavy when the polls opened, and then tapered off by midday.

"We're kind of bracing for the afternoon rush right now," he said about noon. Maui elections chief Shirley Magarifuji similarly said she was aware of no problems at the polls, but she said the elections office telephones were jammed with election-day questions and issues.

"Our phone lines are ringing. We have lost voters, and people who moved and didn't re-register, trying to find thir polling places," she said.
