Rainbow Wahine's Sanders honored

University of Hawai'i junior middle hitter Juliana Sanders was named the Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week.

Sanders averaged 3.33 kills — with a .621 hitting percentage — and 2.00 blocks per game in road wins over Nevada and Utah State.

It is the third career WAC Player of the Week for Sanders. Her previous two honors came in 2005.


SURFING

PATACCHIA ADVANCES

O'ahu's Fred Patacchia Jr. won his fourth-round heat, but Kaua'i's Andy Irons was eliminated yesterday at the Nova Schin Festival men's surfing contest at Imbituba, Brazil.

Patacchia trounced Brazil's Adriano De Souza, 16.83-6.16, in 3 to 5-foot waves.

Brazil's Odirlei Coutinho beat Irons, 15.17-10.83.


SOCCER

VOTE FOR CHING

Hawai'i's Brian Ching and the Houston Dynamo advanced to the Major League Soccer Cup against New England Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Hawai'i time. The game will be televised live on ABC.

Ching's bicycle kick against DC United is up as one of five finalists for the Sierra Mist Goal of the Year. Voting for this round of three concludes tomorrow. The winner will be announced Friday.

MISO CELEBRATION

The Men's Island Soccer Organization will celebrate its 10th anniversary tomorrow night at The Ocean Club at Restaurant Row.

The party starts at 6.

MISO features 110 teams and 2,300 players. In its 10 years, MISO has expanded to a Masters Division, for players 45 and older, a division for players 35 and older, the MISO Junior League, for players age 11 to 19 — which has 76 teams participating — and MISO Divisions I and II.


GOLF

UH THIRD AFTER DAY 1

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team, led by Travis Toyama's 2-under-par 70, shot even-par 288 yesterday to stand in third place of the 16-team UH Fall Intercollegiate tournament at Kane'ohe's Klipper Golf Course.

Brian Locke shot 68 — the day's best round — to lead Loyola Marymount to the first-day lead at 280. New Mexico State shot 287.

UH SWIMMERS WON

The University of Hawai'i women's swimming and diving team won the Lincoln Aquatics Shootout title in Irvine, Calif., on Saturday after finishing the two-day event with a 6-0 record. A different result was provided to The Advertiser and printed in Sunday's edition.
