Former HPD officer sent to prison on weapons charge

BY KEN KOBAYASHI
Advertiser Courts Writer

A former Honolulu police officer was sentenced this morning to 2 1/3 years in federal prison for being a drug user in possession of two firearms.

James Leslie Corn Jr. was initially accused of providing protection for a crystal methamphetamine deal while a police officer in 2005, but as part of a plea agreement, he earlier pleaded guilty to being addicted to cocaine and possessing two pistols, including one that he sold to an undercover officer for about $200 in cash.

As part of the agreement, the protection charge was dropped.

U.S. District Judge Helen Gillmor imposed the sentence, which was higher than recommended by the federal advisory guidelines.

Corn, who admitted that he used cocaine for about a year before his arrest, apologized in court, but Gillmor said she could not ignore the "great disservice" that he did to the community in his position of trust as a police officer.

Corn must start serving his prison term on Nov. 15.
