Aloha Airlines investor seeks to acquire Tribune Co.

Advertiser Staff

Aloha Airlines investor and investment fund operator Ronald Burkle apparently is part of a group trying to buy Tribune Co., owner of the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune.

The Associated Press reported Burkle, head of California based Yucaipa Cos., and billionaire businessman Eli Broad had teamed up to submit a bid for the company, which also owns the Chicago Cubs.

The report quoted a person familiar with the offer confirming the bid and that Broad and Burkle had previously said they were interested in returning the Los Angeles Times to local ownership.

Tribune Co. has its headquarters in Chicago. Burkle's Yucaipa led a group of investors providing the funding that allowed Honolulu-based Aloha to exit from bankruptcy in February.
