Two Matson ships are among nine requisitioned by the government to carry food and supplies to U.S. armed forces, the Nov. 8, 1941, Advertiser reported.

1883: Mother Marianne Cope and three other Franciscan nuns arrive in Hawai'i to work with Hansen's Disease patients on Moloka'i.

1898: The New Hawaiian Opera House opens. The first production was "Il Trovatore."

1903: Funeral services are held for Robert Wilcox. The Advertiser reported that thousands of people lined the streets for the funeral march.

1922: The Princess Theater opens on Fort Street.

1957: A Pan American Stratocruiser bound for Honolulu from San Francisco crashes into the ocean about 1,000 miles from O'ahu, killing 44 passengers and crew.

1978: The Federal Maritime Commission orders Matson Navigation Co. to ship Christmas trees to Hawai'i in refrigerated containers even though the containers will be taken from food shipments. The state of Hawai'i's antitrust division had protested Matson's effort not to refrigerate the trees. Matson said there was a shortage of refrigerated containers.

1985: Prince Charles and Princess Diana arrive in Hawai'i for an 18-hour rest stop before continuing their journey to Washington, D.C.
