Island talent dots NCAA soccer tourneys PAVing the way

West Texas A&M junior offensive lineman Tommy Crowley (No. 58, Kalaheo '02), junior tight end Kolo Kapanui (No. 88, Kamehameha) and senior offensive lineman Nalo Cabuyaban (No. 65, Farrington '00) have helped the Buffaloes to a 9-1 (7-1 Lone Star Conference) and a No. 12 ranking in the Division II AFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll.

Fourteen teams featuring players from Hawai'i are participating in the NCAA Men's and Women's Soccer Division I Tournaments, which begin this week.

On the women's side:

  • Denver (18-2-1) won the Sun Belt Conference Title. Freshman midfielder Lizzy Carlson (Punahou '06 of Honolulu) scored nine goals and added four assists.

  • Duke (9-8-2) junior goalkeeper Allison Lipsher (Punahou '04 of Hawai'i Kai) played in 18 games, with a 0.95 goals-allowed average, and seven shutouts.

  • Idaho State (10-8-1) senior defender Jen Loo (Mililani '03) scored twice and had three assists, starting 18 of 19 games. The Bengals won the Big Sky Conference tournament.

  • Long Island (13-7-1) won the Northeast Conference Tournament. Senior forward Erica Chong (Hilo '03) has one assist in 19 games.

  • Loyola Marymount (10-2-6) freshman forward Katrina Chong (Hilo '06) scored twice in 17 games.

  • Santa Clara (15-4-1) won the West Coast Conference title. Freshman midfielder Alyssa Chun (Kamehameha '06 of Kane'ohe) has not played in any games this season.

  • Rutgers (15-3-3) freshman forward Caycie Gusman (Kamehameha '06) scored one goal and recorded two assists in 19 games.

    On the men's side:

  • Brown (10-4-3) senior goalkeeper David Semenza (Punahou '03) played in seven games, starting four. He allowed eight goals (1.78 per game) with one shutout.

  • New Mexico (13-3-3) junior midfielder David Gualdarama (Kamehameha '04) scored twice, starting all 19 games.

  • UC Santa Barbara (12-7-0) won the Big West title. Freshman C.J. Cintas (Hawai'i Prep '06) has played in three games.

  • Creighton (13-4-3) freshman midfielder Jeremy Wittig (Lutheran '06 of Kane'ohe) did not play in any games.

  • Southern Methodist (17-1-4) freshman midfielder Cameron Holm (Hawai'i Baptist '06) played in one game.

  • Washington (12-6-1) freshman midfielder Daniel Phelps (Leilehua '06) played in four games. Freshman goalkeeper Stephen Fung ('Iolani '06) has not played.

  • Santa Clara (12-4-4) senior forward Keith DeVey (St. Anthony '02 of Kula) leads the team with six goals, playing in all 20 games.

    MEN'S SOCCER

  • Bowling Green sophomore midfielder Justin Kim (Mililani '04) was selected to the Mid-American Conference second team. He led the Falcons in points (12), goals (5), shots (34) and shots on goal (19).

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

  • Oregon senior forward Nicole Garbin (Baldwin '01) was named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week, her third weekly honor in the past five weeks. She is the first player ever to win three in one season, and the first player to win four honors in a career.

    Garbin scored both game-winning goals in Oregon's wins over No. 3 UCLA and USC.

    She scored twice in a 3-1 win over USC Sunday. For her first goal, Garbin stole a ball and dribbled past the goalkeeper three minutes before the end of the first half. She scored her second in the 77th minute after chasing down a long pass for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, putting the ball inside the right post.

    Against UCLA Friday, Garbin scored with two minutes remaining in double overtime after spinning around one defender and shooting into the right side of the goal. The loss was the first in Pac-10 play for UCLA since 2004, a span of 17 matches.

    Garbin's 12 goals on the season broke her own mark of 10 set last year.

  • Idaho State senior defender Jen Loo (Mililani '03) was named to the Big Sky Conference first team, while Portland State senior midfielder Kari Otani (Maui '03 of Kahului) was a second-team selection.

    Loo was a unanimous selection to the first team, one of two players to earn the distinction. She earned first-team honors for the third time. Loo was also selected to the Big Sky All-Tournament team.

  • Franklin Pierce (Rindge, N.H.) freshman defender Allison Haines (Roosevelt '06) converted her shot as the fourth shooter in the penalty-kicks portion of the game as FPU defeated UMass Lowell Friday in the NCAA Division II New England Regional.

    FPU outshot UMass 4-3 in shootout after playing to a 1-1 tie in regulation.

    FPU defeated College of Saint Rose, 3-1, Sunday to win the New England Regional title. It advances to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament to play West Chester (Pa.) Saturday.

    MEN'S SWIMMING

  • Cal Irvine junior Randall Tom (Seabury Hall '04 of Wailuku) set a school record in the 100 butterfly at the Lincoln Aquatics Shootout Friday.

    Tom's time of 47.74 seconds is an NCAA "B" cut time. He also had the fastest times of the day in the 200 butterfly (1:48.20) and the 200 breaststroke (2:05.44).

    FOOTBALL

  • Whitworth won its first game against Linfield since 1975, ending Linfield's 27-game conference winning streak and remaining undefeated at 9-0.

    Whitworth racked up 85 yards of total offense compared to 329 by Linfield, but forced seven turnovers en route to a 17-13 win over Linfield Saturday.

    Whitworth (Spokane, Wash.) junior tailback Chris Ahsing (Campbell of 'Ewa Beach) carried the ball six times for seven yards.

    Linfield junior wide receiver Josh Vierra (Kamehameha '03) caught seven passes for 102 yards and junior defensive back Keone Tawata (Radford '03) had seven tackles.

    Whitworth can win its first outright conference title in football since 1962 (as a member of the Evergreen Conference) when the Pirates host Puget Sound in the Pine Bowl Saturday.

  • Colorado junior linebacker Jordon Dizon (Waimea '04) recorded eight tackles (five solo) and a 7-yard sack in a 34-21 loss to Kansas State Saturday.

  • Mesa State College (Grand Junction, Colo.) senior linebacker Jacob Cadelinia (Campbell '02) recorded 14 tackles (two solo) in a 28-22 win over Colorado School of Mines Saturday, snapping a 16-game road losing streak for MSC.

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Washington State junior guard Derrick Low ('Iolani '04) scored a game-high 18 points in an 84-40 win over Central Washington in an exhibition game Sunday.

    Low was 8 for 10 from the field.

    WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • St. John's senior outside hitter Patti Hardimon (Moanalua '03 of Honolulu) recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 13 digs in a 30-21, 30-21, 30-21 win over Marquette Sunday.

    Sophomore libero Lena Yee (Moanalua '05 of Honolulu) had a match-high 22 digs.

    Hardimon had 10 kills and 15 digs and Yee had a team-high 16 digs in a 30-20, 30-19, 30-21 sweep of Syracuse Friday.

  • Western New Mexico senior outside hitter Liz Narkon (St. Francis '02) was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference first team.

    Mesa State sophomore setter Dara Waialae (Kalani '05) and Western New Mexico senior left side hitter/defensive specialist Meghan Watson (Kalaheo '03 of Kailua) were honorable mention picks.

  • Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) junior setter Anela Iseke (Kamehameha of Hau'ula) was named to the Northwest Conference second team.

    She finished fourth in the conference with a 10.03 assists per game average, setting a Pacific single season record with 933 assists, surpassing the previous mark of 794 assists set by Chrissi Beck in 2003.

    BOXING

  • United States Olympic Education Center boxer Bruno Escalante (Kailua) defeated Antwan Robertson (Knuckle Up Boxing Club) by unanimous decision Saturday at the LCO Casino in Hayward, Wisc.

    Escalante competed at 112 pounds.
