Lewis regains starting corner spot for Warriors

By Stephen Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer

Gerard Lewis has regained the starting job at left cornerback for the University of Hawai'i football team, defensive secondary coach Rich Miano said after Thursday's practice.

Lewis had started two games. But he missed two tackles against Idaho, and was displaced as the starter for last week's road game against Utah State.

A.J. Martinez started that game, but he left because of soreness in his left knee.

On Monday, Ryan Keomaka was listed as the No. 1 left cornerback.

But Miano said Lewis has been "just a little more consistent in practice this week. We make a designated starter on Monday based upon who started the last game or who played the best. Then during practice, we re-evaluate it. We're not down on Ryan, but Gerard has a little more consistency."

Miano said Keomaka "will be the first off the bench" and will play extensively, too.

Miano reaffirmed that free safety Leonard Peters, who has been bothered by a sore right knee, will start. Mike Malala is the immediate backup.
