Puna house fires investigated

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police are investigating two suspicious house fires in the Ainaloa subdivision in Puna.

On Oct. 31, fire officials were called at about 12:36 a.m. to a structure fire at the lower level of a home under construction on Jewel Road. Fire inspectors determined that the fire was suspicious, and called in detectives from the Criminal Investigations Section.

On Nov. 6, police and fire officials were again called to the same site at about 12:02 a.m., and found the structure engulfed in flames.

Fire personnel extinguished the blaze, and again concluded the fire was suspicious, police said. The structure was considered a total loss.

Police ask that anyone with information about either fire call Detective Darren Horio at (808) 961-2385 of the Police Department's non-emergency number at (808) 935-3311.
