Accused ID thief to remain in custody without bail

Advertiser Staff

A state judge this afternoon upheld an earlier ruling that holds Henry Calucag Jr. without bail pending his trial next year on identity theft and forgery charges related to a victim found dead in the Philippines this year.

Circuit Judge Michael Town upheld an earlier order holding Calucag without bail because he might flee if he's released.

Calucag is accused of defrauding John Elwin, 51, of Kaua`i, whose body was found earlier this year with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. It wasn't until last month that authorities were able to confirm the identity of the body.

Calucag faces trial on charges of first-degree identity theft, first-degree theft and second-degree forgery.

Town scheduled Calucag's trial for the week of Jan. 22.
