Jack Johnson songs out on new surf DVD, soundtrack

By Derek Paiva
Advertiser Staff Writer

Two new songs from Jack Johnson will appear on the CD soundtrack of the surf documentary "A Broke Down Melody," out next Tuesday.

The two tracks — "Home" and "Let It Be Sung" — are the first new studio recordings from Johnson since the release of the soundtrack from the film "Curious George." That soundtrack, which debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 music chart in February, has sold more than 1 million copies.

"Home" features Johnson solo, while "Let It Be Sung" — already for sale on iTunes — features Johnson and fellow singer/songwriters Matt Costa and Zach Gill. The CD will also feature a new acoustic recording of "Breakdown."

The original vocal version of "Breakdown" appeared on Johnson's 2-million-selling 2005 disc "In Between Dreams."

The soundtrack for "Melody" will also feature tracks by Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Kings of Convenience, The Beta Band and others. It is being released on Johnson's own Brushfire Records label.

Originally released on the surf film market in 2005, "A Broke Down Melody" is being re-released this month in theatres. The surf doc also gets a DVD release on Tuesday.
