NIPPON NOTES: Kamasami Kong, the former Isle DJ who is now a popular jock with Tokyo-FM Broadcasting in Japan, reports that sumotori Musashimaru and Akebono have cameos in "Oceans 13," third in the crime drama series starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. Due in 2007, the latest installment also features Al Pacino. Another sumo star, Konishiki, was emcee for a standing-room-only Cecilio and Kapono concert at Duo Exchange in Shibuya, Tokyo, a few nights back. The pair stayed 90 minutes after the performance to meet fans and sign autographs, vinyl discs and instruments. Henry's wife, Lezlee, and their new twins also were there. ...

Billy Van Osdol of KCCN FM 100 and wife Sadako had an Island moment when they visited Tokyo, Yokohama, Hakone, Nagoya and Osaka with son Leion, 4. While driving on the Expressway in Tokyo, he heard the Big Island's Vance K (from 76.1 InterFM Tokyo), talking story with kumu hula Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett. Calling in from his Big Island property, Hewett discussed Hawaiian music and hula. "Especially nice," said Van Osdol, "since I'm from Kona side, to hear a Big Island boy on the air in a major city, talking to another Big Island resident." ...

SIGHT 'EMS: That was a tuxedo'd Andy Bumatai on the pool deck of the Hokua Tower last week. A gent from a lanai above shouted, "Hey, 007!" It was a photo shoot for "Thunderball 007," a James Bond-themed New Year's gala that the comedian will host. After the photo session, a woman passerby asked Bumatai — who was shaken, but not stirred — about displaying a gun with kids around and he showed his silver .38 caliber firearm — which turned out to be a Honer harmonica ...

Musician Henry Olson logged a 27-year run doing Hawaiian music for hula stylist Kanoe Miller at the Halekulani's House Without a Key. After a five-year hiatus, he's back with the combo, playing Fridays and Saturdays. Actress Jennifer Garner and 10-month-old daughter Violet are pictured relaxing in the Four Seasons Maui whirlpool in the Nov. 13 issue of People magazine. No mention of hubby Ben Affleck. ...

TRADE WINDS: Quite a fab time at the Hawai'i Youth Symphony Orchestra's winter fundraiser Sunday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom. Bobby Moderow, leader of guest act Maunalua, was blown away by the musicianship within the ranks. He admitted that when first meeting with two orchestra leaders, he thought that the young musicians would be more in the recorder-tooting category. Was he surprised when the group performed with full string backing, thanks to arrangements by Neil McKay. Edith Leong, a front-table sponsor and patron of Saint Louis School, was particularly pleased that the "Beauty and the Beast Orchestral Suite" was performed, since Saint Louis is dedicating the March 3 opening benefit to her. Lots of community support, too, from a clutch of notables, including former Gov. Ben and Vicky Cayetano, pianist Ginny Tiu, Monsignor Terrence Watanabe, former police chief Francis Keala and wife Betty Ann, Dr. Lawrence Tseu and more. KHNL-8 reporter Cindy Paliracio hosted the concert. ...

KHNL 8 weekend anchor Diane Ako will make a rare appearance in PBS Hawai'i promos. She has taped two promo spots for the station's "Real Simple" show since she was interviewed in the TV show's magazine. ...

George Holokai, the revered kumu hula, singer, dancer and musician who died Nov. 1, lived to enjoy three tributes in recent times: On Maui, organized by Ritz-Carlton specialist Clifford Nae'ole, kumu hula Hokulani Holt Padilla and kumu hula Charles Ka'upu; a King Kamehameha Hula competition tribute organized by Keahi Allen; and a 75th birthday bash by his 'ohana and his hula students. Funeral services will be held Nov. 25 and 26 at Ordenstein's Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary. ...
