The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports on Nov. 9, 1897, that Lihu'e has its first ice plant.

1885: The Kapiolani Home for girls born to parents with Hansen's disease is dedicated.

1897: Princess Ka'iulani returns to Hawai'i after being abroad for eight years, mostly in England, on the Isle of Man and the continent.

1910: C. Brewer & Co. purchases the old Spreckels block on Fort Street.

1940: Hawai'i Catholic Bishop Stephen Allencastre dies on board the Matsonia en route from Los Angeles to Honolulu. Allencastre had come to Hawai'i in 1882 with his parents when he was 6 years old.

1980: Mitsui Fudosan (U.S.A.) buys the Halekulani Hotel from the Clapp family of Seattle.
