Highlands students lead Leeward art contest

Three Highlands Intermediate School students and another from Highlands Elementary School in Pearl City last night won top honors in their respective grade levels in the 13th annual Leeward Young Artists contest.

The winners included: seventh-grader Jouvet Apostol, eighth-graders Rachel Ellis and Apelila Hokoana, and second-grader Jady Ojiri.

Other grade-level winners announced last night:

  • Kindergarten: Love Barrett, Kapolei Elementary.

  • Grade 1: Ashli K.A. Hasan, Kapolei Elementary.

  • Grade 4: Jaret Morales, Waiau Elementary.

  • Grade 6: Alisha Maeda, Manana Elementary.

  • Grade 11: Emilie Caban, Kapolei High, and Mike Poscablo, Waipahu High.

    There were 250 entries from 12 Leeward O'ahu public schools in this year's contest. The event is sponsored by the Estate of James Campbell.

    The Honolulu Academy of Arts awarded scholarships for Academy Art Center classes to first-grader Cian Chung of Barbers Point Elementary, sixth-grader Jenna Cortez of Manana Elementary, and Pearl City High senior Gavin Shin.

    An exhibit showcasing artwork of 47 finalists will be on display through Nov. 17 in the lobby of Kapolei Hale, 1000 Uluohia St.

    At the close of the exhibit, the 10 winners' pieces will be professionally framed and displayed through 2007 in the estate's second-floor student gallery.
