Advertiser Staff
It was UH's seventh consecutive victory. The Warriors, bound for the Dec. 24 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, are 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the WAC. Louisiana Tech is 3-7 and 1-4.
UH quarterback Colt Brennan, who completed 27 of 40 passes for 406 yards and four touchdowns and did not play in the fourth quarter, led the Warriors to a 26-10 halftime lead.
But the Warriors put the game out of reach in the third period with help from their defense and special teams.
Brennan scored on a 1-yard run to complete a 71-yard drive to open the period that made it 33-10.
Minutes later, UH cornerback Gerard Lewis intercepted a pass and returned it 31 yards to the Louisiana Tech 19. On the next play, Brennan threw an inside screen pass that Davone Bess took across the field for a touchdown for a 40-10 lead.
UH's defense held and Myron Newberry returned a punt 25 yards to the Louisiana Tech 34. Brennan passed 30 yards to Bess to the 4. Brennan later threw a touchdown to Ian Sample, who reached back nicely to make the catch in the back of the end zone, making it 47-10.
Newberry made an interception and returned it 52 yards to the Louisiana Tech 18. Reagan Mauia later scored on a short run for a 54-10 lead with more than three minutes left in the third period.
UH backup quarterback Tyler Graunke passed 32 yards to Bess that made it 61-10.
Louisiana Tech scored with seconds left on a long pass that made it 61-17.
The game, however, was close for most of the first half.
Louisiana Tech scored on the game's opening possession on a 30-yard field goal. UH rallied behind a Mauia's 1-yard touchdown run and a Dan Kelly 39-yard field goal for a 9-3 lead. But Louisiana Tech quarterback Zac Champion threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Dennis Morris early in the second quarter for a 10-9 Louisiana Tech lead.
UH came right back as Brennan threw an 18-yard scoring pass to Chad Mock. The 68-yard drive was fueled by a 49-yard pass from Brennan to Jason Rivers for a 16-10 UH lead.
After a punt pinned UH at its 3, the Warriors drove the distance with Brennan throwing 14 yards to Ross Dickerson for the touchdown and a 23-10 lead. Brennan had a 32-yard run to open the drive.
With about a minute left in the half, Brennan completed passes of 32 and 28 yards to Rivers. Two controversial plays took place during the drive. Brennan appeared to fumble on a scramble in Louisiana Tech territory. But officials said Brennan was down. Brennan then threw a touchdown pass to Rivers that was nullified. Officials called a penalty saying Rivers was pushed out of bounds, continued out of bounds and then re-entered the field. UH ended up kicking a field goal for a 26-10 halftime lead.
Nate Ilaoa, who was nursing an injured ankle, did not play.
