KONA planned television service shortly, the Nov. 11, 1952, Advertiser reported. KGMB was the first television station on the air in Hawai'i, with service that began on Dec. 1, 1952.

1865: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports on Queen Emma's trip to England.

1884: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that the late Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop has left the vast properties she inherited from her parents and Princess Ruth "as an endowment for two boarding schools to be called the Kamehameha Schools, one for boys and the other for girls."

1917: Queen Lili'uokalani, the last monarch of Hawai'i, dies. The bells of Kawaiaha'o Church and St. Andrew's Cathedral announced her passing, and flags were dropped to half-staff. The formal announcement of her death was issued by Curtis P. I'aukea, private secretary to the queen, in accordance with former royal custom. She was 78.

1918: World War I ends. The Advertiser reported that Hawaiian Electric Co. whistles announced the news to the city.

1919: Hawai'i's War Memorial Park at Waikiki is dedicated.

1929: Inter-Island Airways begins interisland air service. Now known as Hawaiian Airlines, the company started with 29 employees.

1931: A large bronze tablet to Hawai'i's World War I dead is dedicated at the War Memorial Natatorium.

1950: The Hana Airport on Maui is dedicated. The first plane to land was a Trans-Pacific Alohaliner.
