Small quake rattles Big Island

Advertiser Staff

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake rattled the Waikoloa area of the Big Island at 3:36 p.m. today, with some people reporting that they felt it as far away as O'ahu.

The quake was in the same general area as the two devastating earthquakes on Oct.15 that damaged hotels, businesses and homes, said Stuart Koyanagi, a geophysicist with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on O'ahu.

"Some people on O'ahu felt it, particularly in Manoa," Koyanagi said. "We had an employee from there call us."

The quake today occurred about 19 miles from the Kailua-Kona area and was 9.8 miles below the surface.

There were no reports of damage.
