Top tennis seeds in Waikoloa final

Top-seeded Dudi Sela of Israel defeated sixth-seeded Lester Cook of the United States, 6-2, 6-1, yesterday in the semifinals of the Hilton Waikoloa Futures tournament at Waikoloa's Kohala Tennis Garden.

Sela will play second-seeded Lesley Joseph in today's final. Joseph beat third-seeded Aleksandar Vlaski, 6-4, 6-2, in yesterday's other semifinal.

On Friday, Vlaski and Fritz Wolmarans defeated Joseph and Henry Adjei-Darko, 7-6 (6), 6-3, for the doubles title.

Elsewhere, qualifying for the Honolulu Futures concludes today at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex. The four finalists in the qualifying draw will receive a wild card entry into the main draw, which begins tomorrow.

More than 75 tennis professionals are competing for $15,000 in prize money and ranking points.

CROSS COUNTRY



LAAN 68TH IN WEST

University of Hawai'i senior Chantelle Laan finished 68th and the Rainbow Wahine placed 26th in the 30-team NCAA Cross Country West Regional yesterday at Fairview, Ore.

Laan finished the 6-kilometer race in 23 minutes, 7.86 seconds to lead the UH runners. Also running for the Rainbow Wahine were Sharlene Carillo (150th, 24:35.11), Tava Tedesco (164th, 25:4.61), Michel Wilson (192nd, 27:6.37) and Megan Chock (199th, 30:18.66).

Hawai'i finished with 745 points.

Arianna Lambie won the race in 20:58.85, leading Stanford to the team title with a low-best score of 42 points.


BASKETBALL

BYUH WINS EXHIBITION

Wu Tai-hao scored 19 points as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated New Caledonia, 103-56, Friday night in the opening round of the BYU-Hawai'i American Money Group Asia-Pacific Basketball Classic at La'ie.

Lucas Alves added 17 points and fellow freshman Junior Ale, a former Kahuku High All-State player, hit all three of his 3-point attempts to finish with 13 points for the Seasiders.

In an earlier game, Rishi Kakad scored 15 points to lead Hawai'i Pacific to an 82-52 victory over Civil Aviation University of China.

The results of last night's second-round games were not available by the deadline for this edition.


SOFTBALL

HILO PLAYERS HONORED

Four Hawai'i-Hilo softball players earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athlete honors following the 2006 season.

Earning the honors were 2006 graduate Sarah Steele (3.76 gpa, health and physical education), seniors Leo Sing Chow (3.79 gpa, business administration) and Jennifer McCorkhill (3.55 gpa, administration of justice) and junior Meghan Jost (3.55 gpa, pre-nursing).
