Mililani advances to states

Isaiah Lawelawe's 1-yard touchdown run with 3:26 left lifted visiting Mililani to a 23-21 victory over Leilehua last night in the third-place game of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Division I tournament.

The Trojans (8-3), tied for eighth in the Advertiser's state-wide poll of coaches and media, will meet No. 3 Baldwin Friday at War Memorial Stadium on Maui in one of two Division I first-round games of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships.

Leilehua (7-4), ranked seventh, closed to 23-21 on an 11-yard scoring pass from Bryant Moniz to Micah Abreu Laybon and Abreu Laybon's two-point conversion run with 1:59 left, but Mililani recovered the ensuing onside kick.

Earlier, the Trojans benefited from a pass interference call on 4th and 8 from the Mules' 25, giving Mililani first and 10 from the 12. Lawelawe scored his second touchdown seven plays later.

"I'm happy for the boys. They've been working really hard," said Mililani head coach James Millwood.

Leilehua won the Red Division JV championship, 29-13, over Castle. Waipahu won the White Division JV championship, 44-6, over Pearl City.
