The Honolulu Advertiser
The history of today

NOVEMBER 13

The Nov. 13, 1856, issue of the Pacific Commercial Advertiser listed places of worship around Honolulu.

1887: Central Union Church is organized by the union of the Fort Street Church and the Bethel Union Church.

1891: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports on the new 2-cent stamp issued by the Postal Bureau with a likeness of Queen Lili'uokalani. The paper said that Hawaiian stamps were noted for their "rare beauty" and were greatly prized by collectors. The first stamps in the kingdom were issued by Henry Whitney in 1851. He was postmaster at the time.

1899: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser cites a story from the Century Magazine about Samuel Clemens' first literary effort. Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, told the magazine his first article was about the burning of the clipper ship Hornet in 1866. Clemens was in Hawai'i when the survivors of the Hornet arrived here after 43 days at sea in an open boat.

1917: The body of Queen Lili'uokalani lies in state at Kawaiaha'o Church. Her body was moved from Washington Place to the church at midnight, and hundreds of people lined the streets to see the cortege pass. The Advertiser reported the procession passed in silence, "broken only by the muffled tread of military guard and the kahili bearers, the auto hearse bearing the dead queen passed through the streets and in silence, punctuated by the thin wailing of an old Hawaiian woman, was borne into the church." Her crown was on her head while she lay in state.

1940: A block-long fire sweeps through 'A'ala Market on King and River streets. One person was critically injured, and damage was estimated at $100,000. The fire started when a kerosene heater, used in construction, exploded.

1965: A huge landslide piles mud and boulders 15 feet deep across three lanes of Pali Highway just above the hairpin turn after a heavy rainstorm.

1968: Luci Johnson Nugent, younger daughter of President Johnson, arrives in Hawai'i with her 18-month-old son for a reunion with her husband, who was serving in Vietnam.
