Fire department receives grant for new mobile unit

Advertiser Staff

Seven local insurance agencies and Fireman's Fund Insurance Company will award a $115,000 grant to the Honolulu Fire Department to purchase a new fire safety house and safety education materials today.

The mobile unit — the first in Honolulu — will be used to educate children throughout the island.

The safety house is designed to emulate fire in a home. Instructors will use a special smoke machine to fill up a room with simulated smoke and use a heated door to teach kids about the fire on the other side. A vibration system is also used to rattle the house and window blinds in a pretend earthquake.

"This new safety trailer will provide us with another tool to keep Honolulu's families safe," said Honolulu Fire Chief Kenneth G. Silva. "This grant will provide us with a new high-tech tool to teach kids of all ages about the dangers of fires, earthquakes and other potential emergencies."

The news conference will be at 1:30 today at the Honolulu Fire Department's new headquarters at 636 South St.
