New Civil Defense siren tested in Waimanalo

Advertiser Staff

A new Civil Defense warning siren installed in Waimanalo was tested briefly today between 11:15 and 11:20 a.m.

"Police and Fire Department officials were alerted prior to the tests in case they got any calls from the public concerning the tests, but we didn't get any calls here at the operations center," O'ahu Civil Defense spokesman John Cummings said.

He said the new siren is a "mechanical-electrical" device that was "spun" to produce the necessary warning tone.

Technicians present for the test used sound-measuring devices to determine whether the new siren operated at the required volume level, and it did, Cummings said.
