UH tallies $2.5 million in earthquake-related damages

About $2.5 million in damages to University of Hawai'i facilities were found during assessments made by the state following the Oct. 15 earthquakes off the Big Island that rocked the entire state.The majority of the damages were found at the university's flagship Manoa campus or its satellite facilities, including the Mauna Kea and Haleakala observatories operated by the UH-Manoa's Institute for Astronomy .
UH-Manoa's Sinclair Library sustained about $500,000 in damages including cracks in walls and damage to windows and ceilings. Damage at the UH-Manoa's Architecture building was estimated at about $600,000 and including cracks on interior walls, pre-existing cracks that were exacerbated and new cracks on exterior walls throughout the complex.
Jim Manke, UH-Manoa spokesman, said the university its working with its insurance company and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to pay for damages to facilities.
