UH's Heinemann beats 'Aiea's Lajola in Futures tennis

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i sophomore Sascha Heinemann defeated 'Aiea 17-year-old Dennis Lajola, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, in today's first-round action at the 2006 Honolulu Futures.

The U.S. Tennis Association Pro Circuit event is being played at the UH Tennis Complex.

With the win, Heinemann moves into the second round and earns points toward a national ranking. He has lost just once on the UH courts since coming here last year from Germany. That happened in this tournament last year, when he fell in the second round to eventual winner Wayne Odesnik.

Honolulu's Chris Lam won his opening doubles match. Lam and former UCLA teammate Rodrigo Grilli from Brazil swept Geoff Gehrke and Perakiat Siriluethaiwatt, 6-1, 6-1.

Lajola and Nathaniel Schnugg play former Hawai'i Pacific All-Americans Jan-Axel Tribler and Mikael Maatta in doubles tonight at 5:30 p.m.

Lam, ranked 878th in the world, opens singles play Wednesday at 10 a.m. against Kaua'i's Brad Lum-Tucker. Tribler plays at the same time. Former state high school champion Ikaika Jobe takes on Peter Shults, ranked 763rd, in the 5:30 p.m. feature match Wednesday.
