BOE releases minutes of meeting where Shon was fired

By Beverly Creamer

Before he was fired, the Board of Education offered Jim Shon an opportunity to resign, according to a transcript of the Sept. 7 closed-door meeting in which the board released the executive director of the Charter School Administrative Office.

The heavily blacked-out minutes were released this afternoon by the board in compliance with a decision from the state Office of Information Practices.

The board consulted first with the state attorney general, and it was he who suggested the heavy redaction, which left only a few paragraphs readable, according to board chairman Randall Yee.

The minutes also show that only board member Paul Vierling, chairman of the board's charter school committee, voted against firing Shon. Cec Heftel and Garrett Toguchi abstained, while the remaining 10 members voted to fire him. The student board member position is nonvoting.
