The Nov. 14, 1914, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported on plans to reclaim Waikiki's duck ponds.

1891: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser notes the opening of the Volcano House "marks the beginning of a new era in the tourist business of Hawai'i." The paper observed that the carriage road from Hilo was completed and the hotel contained all the "modern conveniences."

1891: The first stage of the Tantalus Road is completed, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported, and officials had driven it with a "three-seated surrey with a fine span of horses."

1946: The 75-day-old sugar strike is settled.

1965: Two hundred families are forced from their homes, bridges are washed out and streets flooded and damaged in the fourth day of torrential rains on O'ahu.

1969: Kilauea Iki erupts just a mile from Volcano House.

1979: Just over 100 public schools reopen after being deemed clean enough for regular use. The schools had closed after union members went on strike on Oct. 22.

1996: Six hours of torrential rain shove an avalanche of rock and mud into the back of a 20-story condominium building in Makaha. Since the beginning of November, O'ahu had been deluged with rainfall well beyond the average for the month.
