1891: The first stage of the Tantalus Road is completed, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported, and officials had driven it with a "three-seated surrey with a fine span of horses."
1946: The 75-day-old sugar strike is settled.
1965: Two hundred families are forced from their homes, bridges are washed out and streets flooded and damaged in the fourth day of torrential rains on O'ahu.
1969: Kilauea Iki erupts just a mile from Volcano House.
1979: Just over 100 public schools reopen after being deemed clean enough for regular use. The schools had closed after union members went on strike on Oct. 22.
1996: Six hours of torrential rain shove an avalanche of rock and mud into the back of a 20-story condominium building in Makaha. Since the beginning of November, O'ahu had been deluged with rainfall well beyond the average for the month.
