Iacovelli won the West Region cross country race on Nov. 4 to qualify for this week's NCAA II National Championships in Pensacola, Fla.

The victory was his sixth of the year, and followed his win at the Pacific West Championship on Oct. 21.

Last week, Iacovelli and HPU teammate Brandon Laan were named to the All West Region Team.

SOFTBALL

PITCHER/OUTFIELDER SIGNS WITH RAINBOWS

Melissa Gonzales, a senior pitcher/outfielder at Valley View High in Moreno Valley, Calif., has signed a letter of intent to play softball at the University of Hawai'i for the 2008 season, Rainbow Wahine coach Bob Coolen announced yesterday.

Gonzales, a 5-foot-7 right-hander, has been named first-team all-conference as a pitcher the past three seasons. She also bats clean up for Valley View.

Gonzales played for the 18-and-under gold Corona Angels, who finished third at the 2006 ASA Nationals. She also participates in the elite Mike Smith Pitching Academy in Southern California.

"Melissa is a very versatile athlete whom we are looking forward to having in our program," Coolen said. "We look for her to earn a spot in the pitching rotation and getting her bat in the lineup as a dual position player."
