Kailua hillside project runs through May

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Transportation this week begins a $6.8 million project near the entrance of Kailua to reduce the risk of rockslides along the Kailua Road hillside.

The work by Prometheus Construction — to build a drainage ditch and a rockfall catchment/drainage ditch, to tie down boulders with cables, to install a rockfall protection fence and nets to stabilize the slope — is expected to run through May.

The Kailua-bound lanes of Kailua Road were moved away from the hillside to make way for the project. It will take another two months to restore the road and replace 25 loulu palms that were moved for the project, state DOT officials said.
