Emergency sirens to sound if tsunami threat elevates

Advertiser Staff

If the tsunami watch issued for Hawai'i is upgraded to a warning State Civil Defense will sound the sirens and initiate the Emergency Alert System, said State Civil Defense spokesman Ray Lovell.

Lovell said Civil Defense is monitoring the tsunami threat, which was generated early this morning after a 8.1 magnitude earthquake hit 6.7 miles north and 153.5 east of the Kuril Islands.

If the sirens sound, go immediately to higher ground and get away from the coast lines.

Japan and parts of Russia are already under a warning.

If tsunami waves impact Hawai'i, the estimated earliest arrival is 7:20 a.m.
