DOT selects contractor for Lahaina Mini-Bypass project

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Transportation selected Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co. for Phase 1A of the Honoapiilani Highway realignment project on Maui, otherwise known as the "Lahaina Mini-Bypass."

Phase-1A of the project will be a two-lane road running from Lahainaluna Road to the future Keawe Street Extension (to be eventually done by Maui County).

The estimated $48 million project will begin at the end of the year. The contractor will have 750 calendar days to design and build the road.

The mini-bypass is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and improve circulation in the Lahaina and Lahainaluna areas. Future phases of the Honoapiilani Highway realignment project will continue the new two-lane roadway south toward Launiupoko and north towards Kapalua.

"We are very pleased that this project is moving forward after years of discussion and planning," said state transportation director Rod Haraga. "This is the first of several phases of the bypass project to help deal with the traffic congestion along West Maui."
