Receding Waikiki waters leave visitor with knee injury

A series of surges in coastal waters this morning resulting from a massive earthquake north of Japan led directly to at least one injury on O'ahu, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department.Cheplic said a 70-year-old woman visitor from San Francisco was in the water off Kuhio Beach in the Waikiki area between 8:50 a.m. and 9:10 a.m. when the water receded about four feet and pulled the woman through an open space in a breakwater wall.
The woman banged her knee on the wall as she was being pulled out toward the open ocean but managed to make it back to shore, Cheplic said.
She was treated for minor injuries at the beach by city lifeguards before returning to her hotel, Cheplic said.
