UH-Manoa hosts a "Stella" shouting contest tomorrow

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Department of Theatre and Dance is holding a "Stella!" shouting competition, dubbed, "STELL-OFF!" to coincide with its current production of the Tennessee Williams classic, "A Streetcar Named Desire" at the Kennedy Theatre.

The "STELL-OFF!" will take place at 6:45 p.m. tomorrow in front of the theater.

Inspiration for the event comes from a scene made famous by Marlon Brando as Stanley Kowalski, screaming in the rain for his wife Stella.

A similar event is held annually in New Orleans. Lurana Donnels O'Malley the director for the Hawai'i production, is a New Orleans native. This idea is borrowed to celebrate one of the great scenes in American theater.

In the "STELL-OFF!" competitors battle each other to see who can yell loudest, and most convincingly, for Stella or for the Brando character, Stanley. A guest panel of local notables will judge.

Invited judges include radio personalities, TV news anchors and members of a certain TV show shot here on the island. Prizes will be awarded to the best "Stanley" and the best "Stella," based on sheer volume in addition to style and conviction.

In addition to this event, other events coincide with this production of "Streetcar":

At 7 p.m. Saturday: "Desperate Choices: Blanche DuBois and the Staging of A Streetcar Named Desire," by Felicia Hardison, Londre guest lecturer from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Precedes the 8 p.m. performance at the Kennedy Theatre. Free.

At 12:30 p.m. Sunday: "Tennessee Williams: His Life in His Work" by Felicia Hardison Londre, guest lecturer from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, a talk in Hamilton Library's Yap Conference Room, UH-Manoa. Precedes the 2 p.m. matinee. Light refreshments. Free.
