1950: A blasting powder explosion in the Schofield east range causes widespread damage in a 4-square-mile area surrounding Wahiawa. More than 50 buildings and residences suffered damage.

1961: Honolulu police arrest the distributor of the book "Tropic of Cancer" and announce they will confiscate any copies found in Honolulu stores. The vice squad began making spot checks of bookstores and newsstands.

2001: Singer Loyal Garner, Hawai'i's "Lady of Love," dies after a two-year battle with colon cancer. She was 55.
