To mark the University of Hawai'i 's centennial year in 2007, the university will begin offering scholarships through which high school graduates statewide who earn an unweighted grade-point average of at least 3.8 or score at least 1,800 on the three-part SAT exam, may receive $1,000 a year for up to four years.
Students meeting requirements for both grade-point average and SAT score will be eligible for scholarships of up to $2,000 a year for four years.
UH President David McClain, who announced the centennial scholarships program today at the university's Board of Regents meeting at Maui Community College, estimated that 1,000 high school seniors are expected to qualify for a scholarship based on grades while about 1,300 students will likely earn the required SAT score.
The university will earmark about $1 million for the first year of the scholarship program, which begins in Fall 2007, at each of the university's 10 campuses, McClain said.
