'Strike Zone' taping on Lana'i

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

A crew from the Outdoor Channel's "Randy Jones' Strike Zone" is on Lana'i to tape a couple of shows for broadcast in early 2007.

Randy Jones, a former major league baseball pitcher, is star and host of the cable show. He also is president of Randy Jones Baseball Barbecue Sauce Inc. and Randy Jones Baseball Academy and hosts a radio talk show heard in Southern California.

Also here, as a guest on the show: Darrell Evans, who played for the Braves, Giants and Tigers in a 20-year major league career, 1969 to 1989.

DIRECTING A CAST OF SURFERS BELOW

Dwight Martin, producing director at Manoa Valley Theatre, took to the air yesterday morning wearing another hat: as a licensed Civil Air Patrol pilot. He was up at 4 a.m. to fly a mission on the North Shore, warning surfers via a public address system from the air about the threat of rising surf because of an earthquake in Japan.

Martin, a licensed pilot for 32 years, joined a crew of three for the Civil Defense mission.

He joked that he was tempted to — but didn't — urge the folks below to buy tickets to MVT's "Fully Committed," now playing at Manoa Valley Theatre.

Correction: Darrell Evans was not the first player to hit 40 home runs with the Detroit Tigers. A previous version of this story contained incorrect information.
