Keali'i Reichel, Borders donate $30K to Red Cross

"Kawaipunahele," the CD that launched Keali'i Reichel's career as a singer, continues its good deeds, producing a large donation for the local Red Cross.

Reichel's record label, Punahele Productions, teamed up with Borders Hawai'i in March through July, to earmark part sales of Reichel's debut disc, for flood relief from the 42 continuous days of rain in the Islands.

A check for $30,000 will be presented to the Hawai'i Chapter of the Red Cross at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Red Cross headquarters. Jim Linkner of Punahele Productions and Les Honda of Borders Hawai'i will make the presentation.

The disc was sold at Borders outlets for $9.99 — nearly 6,000 were sold — with $5 from each sale going to the Red Cross.

"Keali'i has always been a strong voice for Hawaiian culture and for him to reach out to the community this way is both generous and a true embodiment of the aloha spirit," said Coralie Matayoshi, CEO of Hawai'i Red Cross, in a statement.

"We knew we had to do something to help," said Linkner.
