Man charged under tougher sexual predator law

Advertiser Staff

A man arrested this week for allegedly trying to entice a minor via the Internet into having sex with him will be the first prosecuted under a new state law that, if he's convicted, would land him a mandatory minimum of one year in jail.

Attorney General Mark Bennett, in a press conference today held with other members of the Hawai'i Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, said the law enforcement community wants sexual predators to know that the crime is a serious one that authorities are monitoring closely.

"If we find you, we will get you," Bennett said.

Brian Y. Uejo, 43, was arrested Wednesday outside the McCully-Mo'ili'ili Public Library, where he had allegedly asked someone over the Internet he believed was a 15-year-old girl to rendezvous with him to have sex.

Uejo was arraigned at District Court this morning and is being held on $20,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for next week.
