Waipahu tops Kamehameha-Hawaii in state D2 football

KEAAU, Hawaii — Quarterback Gil Fernandez passed for one touchdown and ran for another, and Matt Soueira scored on a 6-yard run and a 51-yard pass play, leading the Waipahu Marauders to a 27-12 victory over Kamehameha-Hawaii in a first-round game of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Division II Championships last night at Kamehameha-Hawai'i.

Waipahu advances to the next week's semifinals against top-seeded Kauai at Vidinha Stadium on Kauai.

Soueira, a senior slotback, scored twice in the second quarter, on a 6-yard run down the left side with 8:58 remaining, and on a 51-yard pass from Fernandez down the right flank with 6:22 left.

Fernandez had a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
