Advertiser Staff

President Bush will present the President's Volunteer Service Award to Tripler Army Medical Center volunteer Eloise Monsarrat during his Hawai'i stopover Monday.

Monsarrat has devoted more than 10,000 hours as a pet handler with the Human Animal Bond Program at the military hospital. Specially chosen dogs, cats and rabbits work with therapists to help patients recover from physical and other ailments.

Since 2004 more than 502,000 people, including more than 840 in Hawai'i, have earned the award. President Bush has met more than 550 such volunteers around the country.

Monsarrat has volunteered with Tripler's animal bond program for 16 years. She also helps with orientation training for new animal handlers.
