Kawamoto invites comments on Kahala plan

Advertiser Staff

Japanese billionaire Genshiro Kawamoto has set up a P.O. Box for people interested in contacting him about his recently floated idea to rent 10 homes on Kahala Avenue to needy Hawaiians for $100 to $200 a month.

Kahala Avenue is home to some of the most expensive properties in Hawai'i.

You can send comments to the real estate tycoon at P.O. Box 15547, Honolulu, 96830.

An Advertiser story on Oct. 10 reporting Kawamoto's plans resulted in more than 150 phone calls and e-mail comments from readers sent to the newspaper.

Kawamoto has bought 18 homes on Kahala Avenue since 2002 for about $103 million.

In addition to renting 10 homes to needy Hawaiians, Kawamoto said he'd like to turn five other homes on Kahala Avenue into public museums displaying his art collection. He intends to use the other three properties for his own residence.
