1874: King Kalakaua departs for a tour of the United States.
1901: St. Augustine Chapel in Waikiki is dedicated.
1910: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that the large packing firm Libby, McNeill & Libby has purchased 50 percent of Hawaiian Cannery Co., in Ahuimanu on O'ahu.
1931: The board of health decides to hasten the removal of 72 piggeries between Kalaniana'ole Highway and Kahala Avenue. Sixteen residents had complained about flies and unpleasant odors.
1954: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints selects La'ie as the site for its new junior college. (The school is now Brigham Young University-Hawai'i.)
1963: The 85-year-old Falls of Clyde returns to Hawai'i for good.
2000: Nearly 400 employees of Kaua'i's Kekaha and Lihu'e sugar plantations mark their last day of work with a loud, horn-honking procession of semi-trucks, cane haulers and other company vehicles through the streets of Lihu'e and Hanama'ulu.
