1889: Oahu Railway & Land Co. begins regular passenger service to 'Aiea.

1917: Queen Lili'uokalani's funeral is held in the throne room of 'Iolani Palace. Royal honors were paid to the queen and some 40,000 people lined the streets for her funeral procession to the Royal Mausoleum.

1942: Ground is broken for the new Hawaiian Humane Society at King and Wai'alae.

1955: The Advertiser reports a series of problems have delayed the opening of the Waikiki Shell. Shortages of material and bad weather hampered the contractor, and the territory was slow in turning over money for landscaping, fencing and walkways. The Waikiki Shell opened in September 1956.

1959: A 1,050-foot lava fountain at Kilauea Iki is considered a "flaming menace," and all lookouts on the crater rim are closed. The wind-whipped fountain showered pumice as far as a mile away.
