'Gem Hunter' gives talks on Afghanistan this week

Advertiser Staff

Gary Bowersox, who has traveled to buy gems from miners in countries including Afghanistan, Brazil, Burma, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and Thailand, will give talks touching on his hunt for gems, his brushes with the Taliban and his insight into the Afghanistan war at 11 a.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, at his gem store in the Waikiki Galleria Office Towers, 2222 Kalakaua Blvd., Honolulu.

Bowersox, the author of "The Gem Hunter in Afghanistan," returned in August from spending three weeks traveling in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan. He counted himself a friend to the late Ahmed Shah Massoud, the Northern Alliance leader Bin Laden had assassinated a few days before the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The gem hunter has his own theories about possible hiding places for Osama Bin Laden and who may be hiding him.

Bowersox has traveled to more than 80 countries.

He has chaired eight symposiums on gems and minerals of Afghanistan, and was presenter/consultant on "The Gem Hunter in Afghanistan 2001," a 50-minute television documentary.

Bowersox' store and gem museum is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays (closed Thanksgiving Day). For more information, call 792-3332 or 277-2543.
