Sela wins Honolulu tennis title

Top seed Dudi Sela of Israel rolled over Fritz Wolmarans of South Africa, 6-3, 6-3, yesterday to capture the Honolulu Futures USTA Pro Circuit event at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex.

"I'm just happy to get through the tough matches," Sela said. "It is a good feeling to play in the finals."

With the victory, Sela earned $1,950 and 18 ranking points.

"It's the points that I'm really happy to get," he said. "These points will help raise my ranking for next season."

Wolmarans, who earned $1,350 and 12 ranking points, teamed with Aleksandar Vlaski of Serbia & Montenegro, to win the doubles title, 6-4, 6-2, over Vahid Mirzadeh and Brett Ross of the United States.

The $50,000 Wailea Challenger on Maui begins today.

UH WOMEN TO FACE PLAY-IN WINNER

The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team is seeded No. 1 in the Western Athletic Conference tournament, and will face a play-in winner in the first round on Wednesday.

The Rainbow Wahine (23-5, 15-1 WAC), who won their 11th straight regular-season league title, will face the winner of Wednesday morning's match between No. 8 Fresno State and No. 9 Louisiana Tech. The UH match will start at 5:30 p.m.

The tournament will be at the Lawlor Events Center at the University of Nevada in Reno.
