Hawai'i No. 1 for warning consumers about mercury in seafood

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i ranked No. 1 in the nation for warning consumers about mercury in seafood, according to a report released by Washington D.C.-based conservation organization Oceana.

The report, Vital Signs, concluded 75 percent of Hawai'i's stores post the Food and Drug Administration's mercury warning at their seafood counters. Oceana said providing information at the point of purchase is an easy and effective way to ensure that consumers know which fish to buy and which to avoid.

According to the report, states with a high percentage of stores posting mercury warnings include Hawai'i, Alaska, Washington D.C., Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The states that scored the lowest include Alabama, Mississippi, North Dakota and West Virginia.
