Alleged Internet predator indicted

The O'ahu grand jury today indicted a 43-year-old man under a new law calling for a mandatory one-year jail term for using the Internet to lure a minor into having sex.

Brian Y. Uejo, a Nanakuli resident and an accountant, is accused of using the Internet to try to set up a sexual encounter with a person he thought was a 15-year-old girl. In fact, the person was an investigator.

He was arrested Nov. 15 outside the McCully-Moi'ili'ili Library, where he had set up the meeting, according to state prosecutors.

Uejo is charged with electronic enticement of a child, an offense which carries up to 10 years in prison.

Under a law passed this year, Uejo, if convicted, would have to serve a mandatory one-year jail term.

The indictment sends the case to trial. It canceled a hearing this afternoon to determine whether the prosecution had enough evidence for a trial.

Uejo is being held on $20,000 bail. He is expected to be arraigned at Circuit Court later this month.
