Matson Navigation’s first luxury passenger liner, Malolo, arrived in Hawai'i on its first voyage on Nov. 21, 1927. The ship reached Hawai'i in a record four and a half days from the West Coast. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel was built to cater to passengers on the Malolo.

1919: The Matson Navigation Co. liner Maui returns to Hawai'i on its first trip here after two years in Atlantic transport service during World War I.

1954: A fire touched off by a water heater explosion guts the old clubhouse at Waialae Golf Course.

1964: Three people are killed in a robbery and ensuing gunbattle at Star Super Market in Mo'ili'ili. A police officer, a supermarket employee and a suspect in the robbery were killed. Eight store workers had been held hostage by the robbers.

1983: About 70 percent of the faculty in the University of Hawai'i system participate in the state's first higher-education strike.
