Rainbow Wahine win WAC tournament opener

Top-seeded Hawai'i defeated Fresno State, 30-16, 30-17, 30-25, in the opening round Wednesday of the Western Athletic Conference women's volleyball tournament Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nev.

The Rainbow Wahine (24-5), ranked 12th nationally, face fifth seed San Jose State in Thursday's semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Hawai'i time. The Spartans beat fourth seed and host Nevada, 25-30, 30-27, 30-18, 30-28.

Jamie Houston led Hawai'i with 16 kills against Fresno State. Sarah Mason added 15 for the Rainbow Wahine.

Second-seeded New Mexico State defeated No. 7 Boise State, 28-30, 30-15, 31-29, 30-18. Third-seeded Idaho topped sixth-seeded Utah State, 30-20, 16-30, 30-28, 31-29. The Vandals will meet New Mexico State in the first of two semifinals at 3 p.m. Hawai'i time.
