The Nov. 22, 1921, Honolulu Advertiser reported on the death the previous evening of Mrs. Wakeke Ululani Heleluhe, who had been a longtime retainer of Queen Lili'uokalani. She was also one of the charter members of the first Kaahumanu Society, the paper reported.

1916: Writer Jack London, who visited Hawai'i frequently, dies at his home in California. The Advertiser reported London had been intending to make Hawai'i his home.

1921: The Hawaiian Homes Commission votes to offer its first leasehold lots on Moloka'i as combined residential and farm lots. The Hawaiian Homes Commission Act was approved in July 1921.

1932: Honolulu police announce an effort to get drivers here to use arm signals when turning.

1960: Wilson Tunnel opens for the first time on a two-way 24-hour basis.

1963: President John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas.

1967: The engine of a British Overseas Airways Corp. 707 explodes while the plane is taking off from Honolulu Airport. The plane swerved off the runway with a wing on fire, but all 59 passengers and crew members escaped.

1982: Del Monte announces it will end pineapple canning operations in Hawai'i in early 1983.
