4.5 magnitude earthquake felt; no tsunami expected

No tsunami is expected from an earthquake that shook the state about 9:20 a.m. today.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement three minutes after the quake, setting its magnitude at 4.5. Other reports placed it at 5.0. The event occurred at coordinates off the northwest coast of the Big Island.

"Some areas may have experienced strong shaking," the tsunami center said.

Preliminary indications were that the shudder was felt on the Big Island, in Maui County and East O'ahu.

There were reports of power outages in Kona, but no other damage.

Ray Lovell, public information officer of the state's Civil Defense, said their emergency operating system on the Big Island has been activated to to handle calls.
